The data is showing that the September quarter was soft, and this predictable outcome was due to the reduction of the first home buyer’s grant at the beginning of the year and in increase in official interest rate rises. The Australian house price index rose .1% in the September quarter compared to the 2% rise in the June quarter.

Ben Jarvis says that the housing finance and building approvals, key indicators in property growth, had been soft throughout the calendar year.

Senior economist with the Commonwealth Bank, John Peters, suggests that the drop in growth won’t be as bad as it could be due to housing demand being greater than the current supply. He also suggests that this won’t have an affect on the Reserve Bank’s decision to change the cash rate this month.

Either way, housing price growth is slowing down and if you’re looking to buy or sell, it will be important to work closely with your real estate agent in order to determine what is right for your particular needs.
